Answers to
Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I sign up now?

Certain personnel commitments are required for the convention.  With so many events and activities to plan for, we cannot wait until the last minute to recruit volunteers.  We understand that many more will come forward at that time but we need the majority of our numbers to sign up now.  However, specific assignments may not occur for everyone until after January, 2011.

Will I be required to pay the Lions International Convention registration fee and register for the convention?

No.  Working as a volunteer, you will not be required to register.  However, you are encouraged to register and participate in the convention.  If you are to be a voting delegate and/or wish to attend but not work at the plenary sessions, international show, or other convention events you will need to register with Lions Clubs International.

Will I have to purchase a “parade uniform” or the “dress uniform”?

No. If you are working as a 2011 volunteer, you will be presented with a volunteer shirt to be worn. However, you are encouraged to purchase the dress/parade uniform and wear it when you are not working.  We would love to have a large presence in the parade.

Will I have to purchase any type of “work uniform”?

No.  Same as above.

What if my work schedule changes, I get sick, have a death in family, or have some other emergency so that I cannot make the event for which I am scheduled?

Simply notify your committee chairman, division chairman, general chairman, or the host committee office during the convention.  We are going to recruit a few standby workers for each event just for this very reason.

If during the convention, I see that I will be available for other events or want to work other events in addition to the ones that I signed up for, what should I do?

Contact the host committee office or one of the Division Chairmen.

Will parking be furnished?

No. There will be free shuttle buses from the MD 19 delegation hotel and other convention hotels. Plan on taking this free transportation.

When will I receive directions, instructions, or training as to where I am to be or what I am to do?

After receiving your sign-up form, you should be contacted by the division chairman or committee chairman for your event or function to confirm your information.  We will be having training and information sessions at the 2010 MD19 Fall Forum or District Spring Conferences, which will be in March, April or May, 2011.  If you are unable to attend, information will be sent to you. LCI staff may conduct some training.

What if we have a problem at the convention with an attendee?

Contact or have someone contact the Host office.  They will have a booklet of telephone numbers, pager numbers, or other means of communication  to contact the local public safety, medical, host committee office, or the LCI office.  LCI staff will also prepare a Crisis Management Plan specifically for Seattle, regarding how to deal with emergencies that may arise.

Will I have to pay the convention rate to stay at the MD 19 Delegation Hotel or another hotel if I am working?

Yes.  We all will if we make housing arrangements through Lions Clubs International – but you are also free to secure your own housing in hotels, campgrounds, or other locations. It is very important that the Host committee know your convention housing, and contact information, so that we may be able to reach you if need be.

Can my non-Lion spouse and/or children work also?

Yes, and they are encouraged to do so. Please use your best judgement in signing up children to work based on the event or need requirements. (children need to be at least a teenager)  Teenagers or Leos are encouraged to work with the parade reviewing stands serving the VIPs refreshments.  Leos will have a Leo booth in the Convention Center.  Teens may not work as a parade marshal or sergeant-at-arms.  We may have some high school and college foreign language students who will be working as interpreters.

The sign-up directions state that all times and events are tentative.  When will we know for sure?

The International Board will set the final schedule of events at their October 2010 board meeting.

Who is in charge?

Ultimately, the Lions Clubs International Convention Division and the International President, oversee the convention.  Any problems or questions should be directed through the host committee chain of command first before bothering these busy International Lions.

Will I get paid or any reimbursement for working?

Payment will be rendered in fun and memories of the greatest ever International Convention.

What are the registration fees for Leos?

They are $10 for 17 and under and $80 for 17 and over.
